Rev. Don Doll, S.J., renowned photo-journalist of Creighton University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, will present “Jesuit Refugee Service: the New Missionary Venture of the Society” on Saturday, October 3, 2009, as the 51st Annual Alpha Sigma Nu Lecture.
Father Don will narrate a slide show “tour around the world”, documenting the work of the JRS in many of the 50 countries where it operates. An overview of his impressive portfolio can be seen online at http://magis.creighton.edu.
The 11:30 a.m. lecture will be held in the Hixson-Lied Auditorium of the Mike and Josie Harper Center on Creighton’s campus and will be free and open to the public. The Omaha Alpha Sigma Nu Alumni Club is the second oldest Club in the Society, and has as its purpose the encouragement of our alumni’s lifelong commitment to the ΑΣΝ values of scholarship, loyalty and service, the ideals of Jesuit education. The Club has achieved this goal through its signature event, the William F. Kelley, S.J. Endowed Lecture. The Lecture, now entering it 51st year, has featured many luminaries including:
- 2008- Rev. David Schultenover, SJ, speaking about the Society of Jesus and its 2008 meeting in Rome, the 35th General Congregation.
- The 2006 Lecture featured Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska.
- 2003- Kevin Burke, S.J. on “Crisis at Kairos”
- In 2002, Rev. Jim Hug, S.J. on “An Ignatian Contemplation on the Two Standards”
- 2001- Ron Hansen on “The Catholic Writer”
Other speakers include Jerris Leonard, J.D, Mary Alice Williams, Walter Burghardt, S.J., John Kavanaugh, S.J., Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Michael DeBakey, MD, Morris udall, Rep. Henry Hyde, Yitzhak Rabin, Amb. Patrick J. Lucey, Sen. Michael Mansfield, Amb. Henry Cabot Lodge, President Harry S. Truman, and William F. Buckley.
