An Ongoing Pivot: Jesuit University Campus Life in a New Reality

A panel discussion featuring two university presidents, two Alpha Sigma Nu chapter advisers/faculty members, and two Alpha Sigma Nu student chapter officers will address life on Jesuit campuses in the current reality. From racial justice to virtual learning, to campus life during the ongoing pandemic, the panel will discuss the ever-changing and challenging 2020 at our Jesuit institutions.

Our panelists include:

Joseph M. McShane, S.J., (Le Moyne ‘91) President, Fordham University 

A native of New York, Father McShane entered the Society of Jesus in 1967 and was ordained a priest in 1977. He received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Boston College, and master's degrees in theology from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley in 1977. He completed his doctorate, in the history of Christianity, at the University of Chicago in 1981.  He served as a member of the Department of Religious Studies at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, from 1981 to 1992. He served as the dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill from 1992 to 1998. In 1998, he became president of the University of Scranton, a post that he held until he returned to Fordham in 2003 to assume the Fordham presidency. 

 

Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., (Loyola Maryland ’08) President, Loyola Marymount University 

 Timothy Law Snyder is the 16th president of Loyola Marymount University. He has been a distinguished educator, mathematician, and academic administrator at Jesuit institutions for nearly 30 years. President Snyder’s academic and research interests include computational mathematics, data structures, design and analysis of algorithms, geometric probability, digital signal processing, airline flight safety, HIV diagnosis and prevention, and the education of the millennial and post-millennial generations. He earned his M.A. and his Ph.D. in applied and computational mathematics from Princeton University. He also graduated with an M.S. in mathematics, a B.A. in psychology, and a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Toledo. 

Paul Fontana, Ph.D. (Seattle ‘09) Chapter Adviser, Seattle University 

Dr. Fontana earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Physics at the University of Wisconsin and his B.S.in Physics and Mathematics at Michigan State University.  An Associate Professor in the Physics Department at Seattle University since 2002, he teaches a wide variety of physics courses from the introductory level through Advanced Physics Laboratory.  His research topics include Experimental fluid dynamics, especially turbulence in 2-dimensional systems. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust, and Research Corporation. 

 

 

Debra J. O’Connor, Ph.D., CPA (Holy Cross ’18) Chapter Adviser, College of the Holy Cross 

Dr. O’Connor earned her Ph.D. in Business Administration with a Concentration in Management Science and a Minor in Industrial Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, her M.S. in Taxation at Bentley College, and a B.B.A in Accounting at the  University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She teaches a variety of courses at the College of the Holy Cross including Financial Accounting, Operations Research, Federal Income Taxation, and Taxation of Entities and Cost Accounting.  Her service to Holy Cross includes the Committee on Tenure and Promotion, the Faculty Compensation Committee, the Academic Affairs Council, the College Committee on Mission and Identity. 

 

Brianna Reed (Spring Hill ’19) Chapter Co-president, Spring Hill College 

Ms. Reed is a senior Marketing and Management major at Spring Hill College. She holds presidential positions in Alpha Sigma Nu and Sisters In Service, along with being a Resident Assistant and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. After graduation, she plans to earn her MBA at Spring Hill.  She is originally from New Orleans, LA.  

 

 

Allison Vermiglio (Rockhurst ’19) Chapter President, Rockhurst University 

Ms. Vermiglio is studying Psychology, English (film and writing tracks), Global Studies, and pre-MBA. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in counseling. In addition to serving as Chapter President, she is President of Voices for Justice (a social justice organization), a Resident Assistant, and a Writing Tutor and Supplemental Instructor.  She is originally from St. Louis, MO.
