Speaker Biography

Fr. Lawrence Ober, SJ, dedicated 35 years to St. Ignatius High School, teaching history and serving as the vice-superior of the Saint Ignatius Dependent Jesuit Community.  Fr. Ober attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Detroit in 1970, a Masters of Arts in Byzantine History from Fordham University in 1973, and his Master of Divinity from Loyola Chicago.  While studying theology at the University of London in 1978, he received his assignment for St. Ignatius High School.  He has taught World History, AP Modern European History, and AP Art History, inspiring his students with his quick wit and ability to intertwine the lighter aspects of history, such as personality quirks of historical figures, with serious discussions.  Fr. Ober is known for his continuous devotion to his studies, speaking nine languages, studying the early history of the Jesuits at the Jesuit archived in Rome, learning patrology at Oxford, detailing the history of India’s 600 principalities, and more.  In 2010, he was honored with St. Ignatius’s Magis Award, the school’s highest honor and now serves as socius to the director of novices at the Jesuit Novitiate of St. Alberto Hurtado in St. Paul, Minnesota.
