Alpha Sigma Nu Announces the Sargent Family Scholarship for First-Generation Student Members

Milwaukee, WI – Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities, is proud to announce the Sargent Family Scholarship for First-Generation Student Members, an endowed gift of $250,000 generously funded by Michael M. Sargent (Fairfield ’83) and family. The scholarship is designed to support and empower first-generation college student members as they pursue their educational goals.

“We are deeply grateful to the Sargent family for their incredible support as model servant leaders of Alpha Sigma Nu,” said Clara Dwyer, Executive Director of Alpha Sigma Nu. “This scholarship will make a significant difference in the lives of student members who are the first in their family pursuing a college degree, providing them with resources necessary to achieve academically and thrive in their communities. It supports Alpha Sigma Nu’s commitment to fostering excellence in the Jesuit tradition.”

The Sargent Family Scholarship will be awarded annually to qualified first-generation undergraduate junior members who articulate their personal and academic achievements, their future goals, and how the exercise of discernment shapes their personal vision. This inaugural year, ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to members who embody the values of Jesuit, Catholic education.

The Sargent Family Scholarship is the first of its kind within Alpha Sigma Nu and a pivotal addition to Alpha Sigma Nu’s dedication to empowering student members who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, loyalty, and service.

Each year, Alpha Sigma Nu also awards general scholarships to student members from its network of Jesuit institutions thanks to the generosity of the Alpha Sigma Nu donor community.

In addition to scholarships, Alpha Sigma Nu distributes the following grants annually:

  • Haig Fund: In 2012, Rev. Frank Haig, SJ, from the estate of the Honorable Alexander Haig, bequeathed a $75,000 grant to Alpha Sigma Nu in support of chapter programs that promote ΑΣΝ’s mission. Chapter officers are encouraged to apply for funding annually.
  • Seelos Grant: Honoring the Blessed Francis X. Seelos C.Ss.R., the Seelos grant supports Alpha Sigma Nu student members attending Ignatian leadership programs and conferences.
