The Alpha Sigma Nu Board of Directors is pleased to announce the 2023-2024 Chapter of the Year award winners. The awards honor student chapters that exemplify chapter engagement that embodies the AΣN tenets of scholarship, loyalty, and service. Special consideration is given to chapters that have made great strides to increase chapter presence on campus, elevate the induction ceremony, and improve chapter processes.

Alpha Sigma Nu is proud of the inspiring work taking place across all our member institutions and commends our student chapters for their dedication, energy, and devotion in promoting the Alpha Sigma Nu mission. Each of the AΣN chapters demonstrate their commitment by engaging with members, partnering with their campuses, creating original programming, and serving our global communities. Each winning chapter receives a framed certificate and a financial contribution for their chapter for the next academic year.

The winners were announced on Instagram Live by AΣN board members, Brandon DaGrosa, University of Scranton ’22 and Mashaal Shameem, Seattle University ’22. If you missed the live announcement, visit Alpha Sigma Nu’s Instagram page at www.instagram.com/alphasigmanu to view the recording.

Chapter of the Year: Boston College

Chapter President: Giuliana Stein

This year, Boston College re-started the process of inducting out of the School of Theology and Ministry. They set a high standard with a very well organized and elevated induction ceremony and were an extremely active chapter both within and external to the university. Half of their 14 chapter programs were new in the 2023-2024 school year and each program specifically focused on at least one of the three AΣN tenets. By utilizing the chapter e-board’s passion, strengths, and on campus connections, they expanded the awareness and reach of Alpha Sigma Nu.

For Halloween, BC raised money for Double H Ranch, a facility in Upstate, NY that provides programs and support for children and families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. During he event, the chapter handed out AΣN merchandise to those passing by, bringing attention to Alpha Sigma Nu. Over 40 AΣN members also participated in Hors d’oeuvres with the Jesuits in the Fall and lunch with the University President Father Leahy in the Spring.

Additional programming during the year included collaborating with the Ignatian Society to pray the Examen every Monday and Tuesday nights together, weekly lunches with the Jesuits, and Labre events to help the homeless and poor, in turn strengthened their connection to the Jesuit community. Notably, BC hosted a Boston AΣN alumni event with the College of the Holy Cross

Chapter of the Year: Georgetown University

Chapter President: Megan Ohlinger

Georgetown University held an increased number of service events and inducted Dr. Anthony Fauci, who provided remarks at the induction ceremony.

The chapter hosted multiple game nights, a wine tasting with Professor Guy Spiellman, study breaks, and offered service events that included food distribution, knitting, volunteering with kids, food donation drop-offs, and fundraising for a health clinic. With such a large membership, and understanding that members prefer different ways of serving, the e-board partnered with multiple organizations to give optionality.

In addition, the chapter held monthly chapter dinners with Jesuits. Below are other chapter achievements:

Partnered with the Center For Social Justice by signing up to volunteer time to help with a weekend event hosted for DC Reads, After School kids, and DC Schools Projects, which all are tutor programs for DC youth.
Partnered with Threads of Hope (Founder is AΣN member) all semester where members can help knit clothes for the hopeless on Wednesday.
Partnered with Friday Foods (Founder is an AΣN member) all semester where members can hand out dinner to the homeless on Fridays.
Partnered with the Holy Family Parish and Health Clinic (Founder is an ASN member) on a fundraiser.
Held a speaker event to spread awareness on the Jesuit Prison Education Network with Fr. Tom Curan and a speaker event with Brother Astronomer.

Chapter of the Year: Regis University

Chapter President: Mary Bush

In addition to having an e-board with members living in various states, this chapter involved many top leaders on their campus in their processes and executed personalized programs.

Chapter of the Year: Saint Louis University

Chapter President: Cecille Nemeth

Saint Louis University celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Alpha Sigma Nu chapter, with a record number of inductees this year!

The induction ceremony was a great succes and celebrated 100 years of AΣN at SLU. Special considerations and attention was given to the entirety of the induction ceremony. A focus was centered on student wellness with Eric Anderson, VP of Student Well-Being, addressing the newest members during his invocation. Patrick Bausch, the prior president of SLU’s chapter, also spoke during the event and shared how he lives out the AΣN pillars post graduation in law school. When walking across the stage, new inductees shook the hands of the University President, Provost, AΣN Advisor, and keynote speaker, Eric Anderson. Furthermore, Dr. Pestello, SLU President provided remarks and discussed the importance of the AΣN pillars and living them out.

During the fall the SLU chapter held a speaker event with Christine Rollins, AΣN member, who shared how she lives out the pillars of scholarship, loyalty, and service through her work as an attorney and professor. In the spring the chapter held an event with Dr. Nadine Alameh, a newly inducted honorary member of AΣN, who presented on the Taylor Geospatial institute, as well as her experiences in the workforce.  At both events, the chapter partnered with SLU’s Billiken Bounty to collect donations for the campus food pantry. Students donated food items to the organization and helped transport items to the food pantry.
