Kate Brennan Gaertner Inducted: Marquette University, 2002
Now in her sixteenth year with Alpha Sigma Nu, Kate Gaertner leads the Alpha Sigma Nu staff in executing the purpose, mission, and vision of AΣN. As Executive Director, she calls upon her experience and skills as educator, non-profit director, and volunteer manager. Key to Ms. Gaertner’s leadership is her work to define the AΣN tenet of Loyalty in the context of the mission of Jesuit higher education and the wider Jesuit mission. She has strengthened the connections with, and among, the AΣN member institutions and with Jesuit partner organizations. During her tenure, she has visited all 28 U.S. Jesuit universities, as well as Regis College and Loyola Andalucia. During her tenure, she and her staff have taken advantage of advances in technology to improve communication and collaboration among members. At the Chapter level, more informed Chapter leaders and more mission-focused Chapter action have become the norm. Increased communication has also allowed for the expansion of resources for alumni, the growth of Alumni Clubs, and the strengthening of the AΣN network, encouraging alumni to live the AΣN pledge. During her tenure, she has facilitated the founding of eleven ΑΣΝ Alumni Clubs.
Prior to coming to AΣN, Ms. Gaertner founded Compass Alliance, a community-based organization providing a venue for prevention programming and advocacy funded by an Office of National Drug Control Policy grant that she co-authored. She served as a guidance counselor and director of college counseling. She earned a B.A. degree in sociology from Marquette University and an M.Ed. in guidance and counseling from Loyola University Chicago. Ms. Gaertner and her husband reside in Milwaukee and are the parents of two grown sons.
